The creation of an inside-outside space was the priority when it came to redesigning this kitchen and dining area that connect with a roof terrace to take full advantage of the coastal views.
Having lived for six years with a dark Victorian kitchen in their charming holiday home in Fowey, Beverley and Bryce decided it was high time to update their domestic areas and create a space to suit the needs of modern family life. When Landmark were recommended to them by their architects, they came to us with a brief for an airy, informal environment that was as much a place to hang out and relax as to cook and eat. The key to the new layout was not only to open up and redesign a characterful kitchen and dining space to reflect the coastal surroundings, but to create a connecting roof terrace that would really make the most of the coastal views.
Where possible the couple were looking to work with natural materials and an organic colour palette. In the very first stage of the project they loved Landmark’s proposals for simple, natural wood cabinets with a strong horizontal aspect to create a more modern styling.

Mat grasped what was required straight away and we had complete confidence that he would design something amazing to fit the space - and he did! We just love the simplicity of the design and how the natural wood cabinets and slate floor work together in perfect harmony. On the more practical side we couldn’t live without the Rayburn or our favourite indulgence - the built-in coffee machine. It really is our dream kitchen.

Overview
Faced with the extensive facelift of a kitchen and dining area in a Victorian seaside home, Landmark set about creating a contemporary space to blend the internal and external areas and bringing coastal hues and atmosphere inside. Aside from the aesthetics, we also addressed the practical need for a functional, durable kitchen that could withstand the rigours of visiting friends and family.
Key objectives
One of the key objectives on this project was to work with natural materials and tones to emulate the coastal environment - drawing inspiration from the estuary shoreline, the tree-lined riverbank and the slate cliffs. The solution Landmark came up with was the use of a native species of timber for the cabinetry, and we eventually settled on Ash for its beautiful and distinctive grain patterns.
Emphasising the modern style created by the horizontal aspect of the cabinets, we plumped for stainless steel appliances. The concession to this was the 'Pewter' Rayburn, which tempers the scheme slightly and gives it a more established feel.
The blending of the internal space and the roof terrace was imperative to the design, so in order to promote this further we used the same slate flooring running through from the kitchen, to the hallway and out onto the roof terrace through large, retracting glass doors.
Further enhancing the sense of openness, Landmark opted to keep wall cupboards to a minimum and built a tall bank of larder cabinets into one alcove, then used open shelving for extra storage and shelving.
