Influenced by the stunning Cornish coastline, a simple Shaker-style kitchen is perfect for Lorraine and Mike France's cottage retreat.

Looking for somewhere to get away from it all, a cottage nestling beside a picturesque cove ticked all of Lorraine and Mike France's boxes. 'We thought it would take us ages to find exactly what we wanted,' recalls Lorraine. 'We travelled to Cornwall and the very day we arrived, this came on the market. We knew immediately it was the right property for us.'

Inspired by its coastal location, Beverley and Bryce Edge's kitchen is filled with natural materials.

Beverley and Bryce Edge live in a Victorian house in Cornwall with daughter Grace, 14. Holidays in Fowey left Beverley and Bryce Edge so smitten with the pretty seaside town that they finally bought a house there. 'After years of staying in hotels, we bought a lovely Victorian property overlooking the sea, planning eventually to use it as a holiday let,' says Beverley. 'The existing kitchen was small and dark, with an old gas cooker and a scullery-style floor. We just did the basics and prettied it up.'

A sympathetic design and fresh pastel palette have breathed new life into the Wasons' once dilapidated cottage.

With a shortage of work space but an excess of damp, not to mention small windows and walls over a foot thick, the tiny kitchen was not the most compelling of reasons to inspire buyers for this Cornish 19th Century cottage. Originally built as two farm hands' dwellings, the buildings were knocked together in 1962 before being extended.

Beautiful flagstone flooring creates the perfect calm backdrop for Paula Bland and Richard Grieve's pretty Shaker-style kitchen in their rustic Cornish cottage

Moving to a pretty cottage in tranquil surroundings is one thing but buying a property that's so derelict the council has listed it as uninhabitable is quite another. However, that's exactly what Paula Bland, a manager for the NHS and her partner, Richard Grieve, a former IT manager, did. Despite Paula's doubts, Richard convinced her that the 200-year-old stone cottage in Cornwall, with a hole where the roof had been and no bathroom, would make a perfect home and so, seven years ago, the couple moved there from London.

Cool blue painted cabinetry and soft muted tones emphasise the coastal location of Nicole Ives's scenic Cornish home.

Leaving the hustle and bustle of London for the tranquil Cornish seaside was all the inspiration interior designer Nicole Ives needed for her new kitchen. Transforming her room from old and tired to fresh and pretty was no mean feat, though, as she realised before she moved in that the kitchen would need to be completely renovated.

Inspired by a 19th Century cupboard, the Appletons have created a light and spacious kitchen, which seamlessly fuses the old with the new.

Nearly sixty years after being evacuated to Cornwall, it was pure chance that the farm, which had been home to Brian Appleton during those tumultuous war years, became home again. "We were visiting Cornwall and decided on a whim to see if the farm was still there," recalls Brian. "It was, although it was no longer a working farm, and it was up for sale." Viewing the cottage, happy memories of a childhood spent there during wartime Britain flooded back to him. Susie adds: "We fell in love with the cottage and spent the following week trying to rearrange our lives. Finally, we had to admit that we just weren't in a position to buy it so it stayed as it was – just a dream." However, coming into money a year later, the couple didn't dare hope that their idyllic cottage would still be for sale. "But it was," chuckles Brian, who adds: "It was meant to be."

Built to match existing Victorian cabinetry, Keith and Judith Tomline's painted kitchen furniture is sure to look good for years to come.

While the rest of Keith and Judith Tomline's Victorian house ticked all their boxes, from its gorgeous Cornish location to its renovation possibilities, it was the less than generous proportions of the kitchen that let it down. 'It looked like an old and ill-equipped scullery with no space to work, let alone eat,' recalls Keith, a chef. 'It was very off-putting when we were considering buying the house.' Having moved in, the kitchen swiftly became Keith and Judith's priority, their first action being the removal of the wall that separated it from the dining room. 'We wanted to bring them together, as well as make the most of the stunning views across the estuary, which we had from the kitchen window,' explains Keith.

It may have taken eight years for the dream to become a reality, but Tim and Amanda Perring's 19th Century barn now offers them luxury living.

Having moved into a half-complete barn conversion seven years ago, property developers Tim and Amanda Perring had more than enough on their hands, without even considering a new kitchen. In fact, so much work has since been lovingly undertaken, that the kitchen isn't just new, but has relocated from one side of the house to the other. "Moving it ensured that we had a better space to work with and a nicer outlook too, especially since we also created a courtyard area which has given us an outside/inside space. We wanted a kitchen that would be sociable, rather than a showpiece," says Amanda. "More importantly, the barn wasn't listed which meant, luckily, we could create exactly what we wanted."
